Word Portrait of Dr. TanDr. Tan, scholar, hard worker, and spaz. Rapid and rabid gesticulation accompanies an eager, frank look that he gives as he attempts so hard to make the college algebra class respond to his cryptic questioning. Everyone is silent as he continues unmet by resistance. A studious individual bangs away at the keyboard of a laptop, the only one in the classroom, with a slight blush of embarrassment.
A line is a line and is proven to be nothing else. Dr. Tan goes along furiously proving lines while the class looks on, unflinching.
Now they are slowly awakening. A couple of lazy numbers come drifting up to the front whenever Dr. Tan probes, and a few stir from their unblinking stupor. Occasionally Dr. Tan poses a coy question, and pauses a moment to let it sink in. He then plows into the answer of the question, with an expression of one who is letting a freshman in on a school secret, or on the behavior of another at that last crazy party.
He emphasizes his point. He goes on explaining
a dangerous hallucinationThe light coming through the window was bright,
much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
